Interracial "Bewitched" Reboot in the Works at ABC
Black girl magic, literally.
A reboot of the beloved supernatural sitcom, Bewitched, is being developed at ABC, and Deadline reports it will focus on Samantha, "a hardworking black single mom who happens to be a witch, marries Darren, a white mortal who happens to be a bit of a slacker."
The couple will "struggle to navigate their differences as she discovers that even when a black girl is literally magic, she’s still not as powerful as a decently tall white man with a full head of hair in America."
The reboot comes from Black-ish creator Kenya Barris and Black-ish writer/producer Yamara Taylor. Barris sold the project to ABC before he left the network for Netflix.
Bewitched has been a popular sitcom since its debut in 1964, but it has always had a close relationship with queer viewers who saw Samantha's having to hide her "secret" of being a witch as a metaphor for their own burgeoning sexuality.
Now that the project has been announced, let the dream casting session begin! For Uncle Arthur we know BenDeLaCreme can do a mean Paul Lynde impersonation, but the most important question is: Who will play flamboyant Endora?!
No matter what happens with the reboot, we know it has to be better than the 2005 film version starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell.
Bewitched airs weekdays on Logo.
