"Angel" and "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." Star J. August Richards Comes Out as Gay

"I could not portray this gay man honestly without letting you all know that I am a gay man myself."

Please welcome another out actor to the family.

J. August Richards, known for his roles on Angel and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and NBC's new queer-inclusive drama Council of Dads, has come out as gay via Instagram Live. In a virtual interview with his Council of Dads co-star Sarah Wayne Callies, the 46-year-old actor revealed for the first time that he and his character, Oliver, have more in common than viewers know.

As Callies pointed out in the interview, Oliver is a "black, gay professional married to a black, gay professional. This hasn't happened before on television."

Richards then shared that he feels a great "responsibility" as an actor portraying this groundbreaking LGBTQ character.

"On television, I don't take anything I do lightly," Richards said. "Honestly, [the role] required me to show up fully in a way that I don't always when I'm working. I knew that I could not portray this gay man honestly without letting you all know that I am a gay man myself. And I've never done that with the people that I've worked with."

The interview marked the first time Richards addressed his sexual orientation publicly, prompting support to pour in from Callies, his co-stars, and other actors. A day after coming out, Richards shared an Instagram post on his feed thanking his followers for the love.

"Yesterday was one of the best days of my life," he gushed. "Thank you feel like cheap words to describe the depths of the gratitude I feel for your support and the crushing avalanche of LOVE I felt aimed at me yesterday. Who knew that something I once thought of as terrifying had within it something so beautiful... For every comment, like, emoji, repost, phone call, text message, everything. I felt it ALL... Thank you!!!"

Congratulations, J. August! Savor the moment.
