Denny Miller, Golden-Age Tarzan, Dead At 80

Denny Miller, who starred on the classic Western Wagon Train and played Tarzan on the big screen in the 1950s, died on Tuesday. He was 80.

Miller, who also appeared as the Brawny paper towel man and the Gorton’s Fisherman in TV commericals, was diagnosed with ALS in January.

As a young actor, he was cast in roles that accentuated his strapping 6' 4" frame, like the 1959 movie Tarzan, the Ape Man and TV shows like The Rifleman, Ben Casey, The Fugitive and Gilligan's Island, in which he played a studly surfer and, later, a Tarzan-like "ape man."

In a 1976 episode of Alice, Miller played a hunky football player that Alice starts to fall for before she realizes he's gay.

But his best known TV role was on Wagon Train: On the show, which aired on NBC and ABC from 1957 to 1965. Miller played a scout named Duke Shannon.
