Interview: Alexis Arquette on Showbiz, Family & Heating Up Boston Pride!

Alexis Arquette: Pretty in pink and ready for Boston Pride on June 12th!

The fun and fabulous Alexis Arquette has been a queer megastar for well over a decade now... Back in the 90s, Alexis appeared in such fierce seminal gay indie film classics such as Grief, I Think I Do and the fab/cult short Scream Teen Scream (alongside a killer Jackie Beat). Of course, Alexis also popped up in more mainstream fare such as the riveting Last Exit to Brooklyn, Pulp Fiction, Threesome and The Wedding Singer. And yes, there was even a tour of duty on The Surreal Life and a hot guest-starring turn as Emperor Caligula in the amazing series, Xena: Warrior Princess. Legendary!

To party-going L.A. folks back in the day, Alexis was also known as the stunningly fierce drag diva Eva Destruction, setting clubs on fire on a regular basis. Over the last few years, Alexis took her journey of transitioning from male to female and made it a public experience, educating all of us on the intricacies and challenges of the trans life. The documentary Alexis Arquette: She's My Brother which debuted at the Tribeca Film Fest in 2007, documented her story. (Oh, and yes... Alexis is sister to those other Arquettes: Rosanna, David, Patricia and Richmond.)

Next weekend, Alexis will star in a very upbeat and splashy gig: She's the Grand Marshal of the 40th Annual Boston Pride. Come Saturday June 12, she'll be perched atop a convertible with a rainbow flag waving at all of the city's celebratory Pride-goers for the big Parade.

After the jump, read a short-n-sassy Q&A with Alexis about Pride. And watch a quick video of Ms. A beckoning you to join in the fun!

Why Boston Pride? Do you have a personal history with Boston?

I did a gay indie film in Boston several years ago, "Never Met Picasso." It was a great experience getting to know Boston over two months.

What have you been working on lately? Where can we expect to see you next?

A few indies, and I’m in talks to host a reality show involving trans-women.

Alexis vamps it up in L.A. with RuPaul's Drag Race starlet Morgan McMichaels.

What does LGBT Pride mean to you? What do you celebrate, specifically?

It’s a day to feel comfortable in a public day time arena. I celebrate our diversity and visibility.

You've been well-documented during your transition... Any thoughts or advice you'd offer to another person considering transitioning?

Everyone’s coming out is unique. You simply have to learn on your own. All families/friends will react differently, and no one can really tell you what to expect. Just remember it’s your body, no one else’s.

The Arquette Sisters: Rosanna, Alexis & Patricia

Have you celebrated Gay Pride with your siblings through the years? How supportive are they?

No, but they are completely supportive of the positive aspects of open living.

What's your most memorable Gay Pride experience?

Dancing onstage with Deborah Harry at L.A. pride ! Superfun!

Any tips on how to survive Gay Pride and all the parties, the parades?

People can tend to over-celebrate, it’s a long weekend... PACE YOURSELVES! Don’t let the dream-day of freedoms turn into an inebriated nightmare. No one wants to baby-sit over zealous party friends on the big day.

Finally, what do you think is the most important issue that the LGBT community needs to be fighting for?

Don't settle for anything less than 100% equality. See you at the Parade !
