New York's Oldest Gay Bar Is Closing
The oldest continuously gay watering hole in New York City is closing its doors this month: The Candle Bar, a queer outpost on Manhattan's Upper West Side, has announced it will close for good on June 22.
While Julius in the West Village opened in the 1867, management didnt stop harassing and ejecting gay patrons there until the late '60s. Candle Bar, meanwhile, hoisted the rainbow flag (metaphorically) years earlier. As the Candlelight Lounge, it was a popular lesbian hangout as far back as the 1920s.
