Meet the Logo30: Adam Eli

The queer activist is applying nonviolent direct action principles internationally.

Every day during the month of June, we will be spotlighting our 2018 Logo30. The powerful series profiles ordinary and extraordinary people who show pride in unique and provocative ways. Visit the Logo30 homepage to learn more about the series.

“If it was not for ACT UP and Gays Against Guns, Voices4 would not exist at all,” says Adam Eli, who adopted these groups’ nonviolent direct action principles when he established his own advocacy organization. Seeking to amplify ignored or suppressed voices, Voices4 fights discrimination against queer people abroad, with concerted efforts directed toward ending anti-gay violence in Chechnya.

Though he has a keen international focus, Eli urges emerging activists to start helping out locally. “There are people suffering in your community,” he tells NewNowNext. “Find them and offer up your skills.”

Just as Eli looks to past activists for inspiration and strength, he’s also looking ahead, especially as the election cycle approaches.

“I’m obsessed with Gen Z. I want to make a sign that says, Millennials love Gen Z. You’re killing it!
