Hunter Parrish On The End Of "Weeds" And What's Next

The madness of Weeds is coming to a close. What will come of Hunter Parrish's Silas?

After eight seasons, 101 episodes and more pot than anyone could ever smoke (well, maybe that’s debatable), the Showtime comedy Weeds wraps up with the final episode this Sunday. Can the Botwin family, led by one of TV’s most unconventional matriarchs (and played by Mary-Louise Parker), find their happy ending? Will they ever be on the right side of the law? And what of dreamboat son Silas (Hunter Parrish), who has grown up on the show to be not only a pot businessman in his own right, but also (thank you series creator Jenji Kohan) a regular piece of eye candy, since Silas was often shirtless or (on a good day) nude on the show.

AfterElton bumped into Parrish recently during the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour in Beverly Hills and asked him how he felt about wrapping the series and if we can expect to see him back onstage anytime soon.

AfterElton: How are you feeling about where you’re at right now?

Hunter Parrish: The closing of Godspell was hard enough and to do the closing of Weeds is a bit crazy and surreal. I grew up on this show so it’s very…I don’t know. I’m just trying to own every moment and love every second that we have left. We literally have five days left. There’s so many adventures to come, which is weird for me because I haven’t been aware of them. I’ve been on this show since I was 17 so I’m like ‘Oh, wait! I can do this?!” I just didn’t know all that. I haven’t been in pilot season in seven years but it’s a cool thing. I’ve made some great friends and there’s a lot under the surface that might come up.

Whether it be a play or musical, Parrish intends to keep theater in his future.

AE: In doing Broadway, how did that open your eyes to that part of your career assuming there’s more stage work in your future?

HP: It is! There’s a couple of things I’ve been looking at in New York. In a perfect world I would go back every three months and do something. Not only do I love the city and the people but I just really love theater and, yeah, I’m incredibly grateful with what I got to do with Spring Awakening and didn’t think the opportunity would come around as quickly as it did with Godspell but now I’m hooked.

I’m also looking at a lot of plays, too. A lot of people didn’t know I did theater and the singing stuff and I also do plays as well and I kinda want to do one of those as my next move but we’ll see. If something great comes up that’s a musical, I probably will jump on it. I just want to get back on the stage.

AE: And you’ve done singing, dancing, Weeds has both comedy and drama but what do you see yourself doing more?

HP: Drama. I think that was the hardest thing with Weeds is that it was comedy but a lot of the content is black comedy. It was difficult for me to do. At 17 when you sign up for that you don’t know what that means. This year I’ve tried to make it more comedic and play with that side of myself but I’m not very funny. [laughs] I don’t know. I think a drama but again if a really great script came along…there’s a script that I’m looking at right now that is spectacular and is a comedy but, again, I feel like it’s dramatic enough that I’m pulled to it. It’s about dysfunctional people, which I tend to gravitate to.

Can a Mac And Cheese diet really give you those pecs?

AE: This is the end of Weeds but since they often had you with your clothes off…

HP: [grins] …uh, yeah!

AE: …the minute you’re wrapped, will you rush off and get a pizza or are you pretty disciplined?

HP: No! I got fat when I did Godspell, for sure, which is impossible because you’re on Broadway and you’re on the Broadway diet.

AE: What is the Broadway diet?

HP: The Broadway diet is basically you can eat Taco Bell and pizza every night of the week because you work and do a show eight times a week. I lost 25 pounds doing Godspell

AE: Did you have 25 pounds to lose?

HP: I did! Of muscle and so when I went back to Weeds I said to them, 'I hope you’re not expecting me to be naked for our final season because that’s not going to happen.' I got back in the gym and started eating right again but Broadway is hard. Any piece of joy whether it be through food or a cigarette or alcohol you just take it because it’s hard. I definitely lost my will to go to the gym.

AE: Guilty pleasure food wise?

HP: Cheese! And I have a rule. My favorite food is Mac and Cheese and since I was 15 I had a rule but that anyplace I went if Mac and Cheese was on the menu – which isn’t all the time but often – I have to try it because I’m a connoisseur of Mac and Cheese. And, unfortunately with my current diet, the pasta-ness is not okay. Just don’t tell my trainer.

The series finale of Weeds airs Sunday at 10pm on Showtime.
