Javicia Leslie Suits Up in First Pic as New "Batwoman"

"Look out, Gotham, I'm suited up and ready to go..." says the bisexual actress.

Warm up that bat signal because there’s a new masked vigilante in Gotham City.

As NewNowNext previously reported, bisexual actress Javicia Leslie has been cast as Ryan Wilder, the new lead in The CW’s Batwoman, after Ruby Rose’s shocking departure from the series earlier this year.

“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,” Leslie said in a statement.

This weekend, Leslie shared the first sneak peek of her in Batwoman's cape and cowl:

"Look out, Gotham, I'm suited up and ready to go... But just wait until Ryan Wilder puts her own spin on the Batsuit," she commented on the Instagram photo.

When Rose left the series, it was assumed the CW, Warner Bros. TV, and Berlanti Productions would be recasting the role of Kate Kane. In a plot twist, it was reported that the series would be getting an entirely new lead character, Ryan Wilder.

In a leaked casting call for the role, Ryan was described as a “female, mid-late 20s, any ethnicity. Ryan Wilder is about to become Batwoman.”

The casting call continued:

She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.

Leslie's casting even received a stamp of approval from Rose, who wrote on Instagram, “This is amazing!! I am so glad Batwoman will be played by an amazing Black woman. I want to congratulate Javicia Leslie on taking over the bat cape. You are walking into an amazing cast and crew. I can’t wait to watch Season 2 you are going to be amazing!!”

Leslie previously starred in God Friended Me on CBS and The Family Business on BET. The second season of Batwoman is set to premiere in early 2021 on The CW.
