The Best Vintage Stores in Los Angeles

Los Angeles boasts some of the best vintage shopping in the country. From luxurious to functional, preppy to funky, there is a store that will fit every person’s style, provided your style involves prints and cuts you won't find in a mall. I've lived in sundresses from the thrift stores below for the past six years and can personally vouch for their economical awesomeness.

Squaresville: This Los Feliz landmark has a retro-punk aesthetic when it comes to its clothing. It has a large and carefully curated collection of darling dresses, vests, purses and re-purposed one-of-a-kinds with a lot of pieces from the 60’s- 90’s. It also has a large men’s section upstairs. Prices range from $8 for a cotton shift to $150.00 for a beaded gown from the 1960s. Don’t let the  employees’ initial surly demeanor scare you. Once they get to know you they are some of the most helpful and interesting people around.

1800 North Vermont Ave.

The Way We Wore: Upscale vintage finds for women are this boutique store’s specialty. Designer labels abound and the looks range from lady-like demure to avant-garde couture. Elegance, taste and historical respect (many pieces from the 1920s, even an Edwardian dress!) often make you feel like you are in a museum rather than a second hand store. There is even a private “inspiration library” available by appointment. It is very pricey, with most dresses starting around $100 and reaching into the thousands. Ask to go upstairs to see the stuff you really can’t afford!

334 South La Brea Ave.

Luxe De Ville : A tiny, homey consignment shop in Echo Park, Luxe De Ville shares the neighborhood’s grungy-chic-quaint aesthetic. It features a strong, but small men’s and women’s collection, handmade jewelry, sunglasses and a great set of hats. This affordable hipster paradise is owned by Oscar, a man beloved by all who know him, and also features original pieces by local designers.

2157 Sunset Blvd.

Crossroads: Crossroads is kind of like the Gap of Los Angeles vintage. It has a huge, consistent collection, reasonable prices, a good men’s section and pretty predictable style. If you are looking for a pair of affordable designer jeans, a cute button-up shirt or a pair of nice tennis shoes (they have the best “practical” used shoe collection in the city) the Crossroads is the place for you.  Most of the clothes are from the past ten years and occasionally seems to lean heavily on outlet store type merchandise.

8315 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood

Playclothes: One of North Hollywood’s best kept secrets, Playclothes is the store for finding affordable costumes in the LA area. This massive store can seem overwhelming at first but stick around and browse because fun, flirty clothes from the past eighty years—from cocktail dresses to jumpsuits---are at your fingertips, if you just take the time to look. Playclothes also has a store cat and you just can’t beat that.
