The LGBT Scorecard For The New Television Season

What got renewed, what got canceled and more!

The week has been full of announcements about the new fall television season: The broadcast networks have been announcing their new rosters and, though some gay favorites have been canceled, new shows offer some interesting possibilities.

While we have to bid adieu to ABC's Nashville and out country singer Will Lexington (Chris Carmack), ABC renewed How to Get Away With Murder, assuring we'll see more of bad-boy Connor.

We'll also see more of bi guy Darryl, now that the CW renewed Crazy Ex-Girlfriend for a second go.

The Real O'Neals got renewed for another season, too—and we don't think anyone's more excited about that than its young out star, Noah Galvin.

After two seasons, NBC has canceled The Mysteries Of Laura starring gay fave Debra Messing. Maybe because it's the only Greg Berlanti series without hot guys in Spandex? (Seriously, the guy has, like, 16 shows on TV right now!)

Berlanti picks up another new series with The CW's Riverdale, a live-action drama following Archie, Veronica, Jughead and the gang in a small town with secrets bubbling under the surface. In addition to plenty of eye candy, our friend Roberto Sacasa (Glee, Looking, Broadway's American Psycho) is on board as a writer-producer.

Empire creator Lee Daniels comes through with Star*, his Dreamgirls-like series about three young Atlanta girls (newcomers Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny and Brittany O'Grady) shooting for the top. Benjamin Bratt and Queen Latifah are the big names in the cast, which also includes trans actress Amiyah Scott and Real Housewives' Miss Laurence.

Oh, and if you were wondering: Empire got renewed, as well. (Whether Jussie Smollet's character survived the finale is another matter.)

CBS has picked up new show Doubt, a new legal drama about the head of law firm (Katherine Heigl) who falls in love with a client who may have committed a heinous crime. Playing defense attorney Cameron Wirth, Laverne Cox is now the first trans actor to be a series regular on a broadcast show.

MTV is saying goodbye to Faking It after three awesome seasons.

But we'll see plenty of LGBT diversity on America's Next Top Model, which is moving to VH1.

Also saying goodbye to the small screen are DILFs Rob Lowe and John Stamos—both Grinder and Grandfathered have been axed. On the plus side, Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell will both star in Fox's new Prison Break series.

Other shows to watch: ABC's Time After Time, Geena Davis in The Exorcist reboot, the Joel McHale comedy The Great Indoors and Drew, an update to Nancy Drew that sees her as a thirtysomething detective with the LAPD.
