Gay Romantic Dramedy "Boy Culture" Returning—As A Series

Ten years later, X gets back into the hustling game. But has the world changed too much for him?

Published in 1995, Matthew Rettenmund's novella Boy Culture recounted the story of X, a 25-year-old hustler who was tiring of turning tricks and looking for something more substantial. In 2006, the book was turned into an indie film, directed by Q. Allan Brocka (Rick & Steve, Eating Out) and starring Derek Magyar, Darryl Stephens, Patrick Bauchau, and Jonathon Trent.

Now Rettenmund and Brocka are are working to bring Boy Culture back as a series of six 15-minute vignettes which combine to form a 90-minute feature. Boy Culture: The Series picks up ten years later and addresses the major changes to the gay community that have happened since the film—including hookup apps, PrEP, and marriage equality.

It will include a mix of original cast members and new faces, including Stephen Guarino, Matt Crawford, musician Steve Grand, and Matthew Wilkas (Gayby, Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark), who will take over the role of X.

Darryl Stephens (Noah’s Arc) returns to play X's hot-and-cold love interest, Andrew. As the series starts, the two have broken up but remain roommates in L.A. X has returned to hustling, but realizes quickly that the game has changed a lot. Barely-legal twink Chayce (Crawford) takes him under his wing, but will the headstrong millennial drive X crazy?

Broca and Rettenmund have launched a Kickstarter to fund Boy Culture: The Series, with a $50,000 goal and an array of rewards.
