Dolly Parton is an Unlikely Angel in First "Christmas on the Square" Pics
Mary, did you know there's a new holiday musical starring Dolly Parton and Christine Baranski?
Netflix has released images from its upcoming original movie Christmas on the Square, which stars Baranski, Jenifer Lewis, Treat Williams, and Parton as an angel named—well, Angel. Christmas on the Square also features 14 original songs written by Parton for the movie.
In the first batch of photos from the film, we see Baranski as Regina Fuller, the Ebenezer Scrooge of this Christmas tale. The official description for the musical reads:
A rich and nasty woman, Regina Fuller, returns to her small hometown after her father’s death to evict everyone and sell the land to a mall developer—right before Christmas. However, after listening to stories of the local townsfolk, reconnecting with an old love, and accepting the guidance of an actual angel, Regina starts to have a change of heart. This is the story about family, love, and how a small town’s Christmas spirit can warm even the coldest of hearts.
We all know Parton is a literal angel sent from heaven above, but this isn't even the first time she's played one onscreen. She was a heavenly creature trying to earn her wings in the 1996 made-for-TV movie Unlikely Angel. Christmas on the Square also serves as a sort of reunion for Lewis and Parton, who both appeared in the classic 1999 mockumentary Jackie's Back.
Parton is really stuffing our stockings this holiday season. Not only is she starring in Christmas on the Square, but she also just released her first Christmas album in 30 years, A Holly Dolly Christmas. Additionally, the country queen debuted some holiday baking items at Williams & Sonoma, including a gingerbread version of her childhood Tennessee mountain home.
After this "Hard Candy Christmas" of a year, we deserve a Dolly-filled holiday season. Check out the first images from Christmas on the Square below, and get ready to trim that tree when the movie hits Netflix on Saturday, November 22.
