Meet Desmond Is Amazing, The Little Drag Queen Who Stole RuPaul's Heart

Mama Ru and Desmond cut the pink ribbon on Saturday, kicking off DragCon NYC.

This past weekend, RuPaul's DragCon sashayed into New York for the first time, and the convention's attendees proved that the (literal) children came to slay.

Early on Saturday morning Michelle Visage and past Drag Race contestants like Darienne Lake, Chad Michaels, Cynthia Lee Fontaine and others gathered in the back of the Jacob Javits Convention Center in midtown New York to watch RuPaul cut the ribbon, officially kicking off DragCon.

"Welcome to DragCon NYC. We are so happy to be here and we are so happy that our queens and our drag movement have inspired so many young people around the world," Ru told the crowd.

"We are all ambassadors to these young gorgeous kids who are going to walk through this building today and tomorrow. We are the ambassadors of the future. We are the promise of America's future and that's why DragCon is important," he added.

Ru then invited a young 10-year old drag queen, who goes by the name of Desmond is Amazing, up onstage. After thanking everyone for coming Ru and Desmond cut the pink ribbon together, launching the weekend.

NewNowNext caught up with Desmond later in the day and asked his mother, Wendy, when his drag career began.

"Since he could walk," she explained. "He would take sheets out of the laundry, bubble wrap out of the recycling bin, and just put them together with tape to make these outfits. Then he would take my heels and clomp around them in the house."

When asked how his moment was with Ru, Desmond said it was "amazing," but Wendy added that he was still in a daze from the interaction and was overwhelmed by the massive DragCon turnout.

On Sunday morning Desmond hosted a children's walk off on the runway in the one corner of the convention floor—and the kids brought some serious looks, but Desmond commanded the stage with his outfit paying homage to RuPaul and Drag Race.

This isn't the first time Desmond has stolen the spotlight. In 2015 he was a hit when he walked in the New York Pride Parade, and he was awarded the Marsha P. Johnson Don’t be Outraged, Be Outrageous Award earlier this summer.

At DragCon NYC, before Ru and Desmond cut the ribbon on Saturday morning, Ru asked him if he had anything to say to America:

"I love it [America] and I'm never going to stop my drag career because it is what? Awesome!" Desmond said into the microphone, snapping his fingers in the air as RuPaul laughed.
