Here's When "Heartstopper" Season 2 Begins Filming

A new casting call reveals some production clues...

The cast of Heartstopper recently marched — and defiantly danced in front of anti-gay protestors — at London Pride, but pretty soon they will be back on set.

Netflix's megahit YA LGBTQ series had our hearts melting back when it premiered this past spring, but after only eight episodes fans were swooning for more. Thankfully, Netflix granted a two-season renewal order for Heartstopper, promising fans at least two additional seasons of Nick and Charlie's adorable rugby romance.

But when would Season 2 finally arrive in our Netflix queue? Well, now we have a new clue to help us narrow down the Heartstopper production timeline. This past weekend Daniel Edwards Casting posted a casting notice on Instagram, looking for actors to audition for the role of Sahar Zahid:

"We are looking for a plus-size actor of British South Asian heritage who identifies as female or non-binary. Professional experience is not essential. Must be U.K. based," reads the casting notice.

Sahar is described as a Year 11 student at Higgs, who is "no-nonsense, independent, a little cynical at times."

The casting call says that the actors auditioning for Sahar must be available "from autumn 2022." This is a pretty strong indicator that is when Heartstopper will start up production again.

So what's in store for our Heartstopper high schoolers?

"If we do get future seasons, I'll definitely want to be bringing in the themes of mental health, because that's something that's really important in the books. The challenge of writing Heartstopper is exploring those darker issues while keeping the tone so optimistic and hopeful," creator Alice Oseman told Digital Spy back in April.

"I've been able to be very candid about mental health, and I explored that in a real way, while not writing something that's intensely triggering or really dark and horrible to read or watch. So that is very much my goal for the show."

Oseman also revealed that Season 2 would adapt storylines from the third volume of the Heartstopper graphic novels:

"That is when the teacher romance happens. So in the show, we've already got Mr. Ajayi, but in the books, there's also Mr. Farouk, who comes in, in volume three," she explained. "And they have this kind of interesting friendship going on in the background that eventually becomes something more."

"I think that will be so much fun to write in the show, and I'm very excited to hopefully get to write it."

Since Heartstopper resumes production in the fall, it's safe to assume that the second season will premiere sometime in early/spring 2023 — until then we will keep listening to the Heartstopper mixtape on repeat.
