Lesbian Couple Named Pastors Of Historic D.C. Church

"We look for the best people in the world and that's who they were."

The Calvary Baptist Church in Washington D.C. has just named a lesbian couple as its new senior co-pastors.

Sally Sarratt and Maria Swearingen will step into their new roles in the 155-year-old church beginning next month, but they were introduced to the congregation for the first time this past weekend.

“We have found it so easy to fall in love with Calvary and its longstanding commitment to be a voice of justice and compassion for those who perpetually find the wholeness of their humanity disregarded and maligned,” the couple said in a press release issued by the church.

Although Calvary is not the first Baptist church to hire an openly gay minister, the historic church is definitely known for challenging the status quo.

The congregation cut ties with the Southern Baptist Convention in 2012 after disagreeing with the group on a few key issues, including its opposition to homosexuality. Calvary also ordained Allyson Robinson in 2014, who is believed to be the first transgender Baptist minister.
