‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ Movie Makes History With August Amazon Premiere

Matthew López's adaptation of the bestseller is headed to Prime Video. Here's your first look.

While everyone is busy talking about King Charles and Queen Camilla, we are excited for the debut of another royal couple: Red, White & Royal Blue's Alex Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry — and now we finally have our very first look at the highly-anticipated screen adaptation of Casey McQuiston's 2019 bestseller.

Amazon has released the first teaser poster for the upcoming movie, and it shows two legs crossing over one another, with one leg wearing an American flag sock and the other wearing a Union Jack sock — the two sets of legs belonging to Alex, the son of the President of the United States, and Britain's Prince Henry, who are in a secret relationship in the book.

While the socks are cute, the most exciting part of the poster is the reveal of when the movie will premiere on Prime Video: August 11. The new season of Heartstopper on August 3 and then Red, White & Royal Blue the following week? It's almost too much.

As Logo previously reported, the Amazon adaptation of the 2019 bestseller by Casey McQuiston will star Taylor Zakhar Perez (The Kissing Booth 2 & 3, Minx) as Alex Claremont-Diaz and Nicholas Galitzine (the Camila Cabello Cinderella, The Craft: Legacy) as Prince Henry. Stephen Fry has also joined the cast along with Westworld's Clifton Collins Jr. and Sarah Shahi (Sex/Life). The Inheritance playwright Matthew López will make his directorial debut and he also adapted the novel for the screen.

“Meeting with and auditioning literally hundreds of actors over these past several months has been a painstaking labor of love that has brought us this diverse and extraordinary cast, led so fantastically by Nick and Taylor,” López said in a statement with the casting announcement. “I cannot wait for the fans of the book (and indeed for the world) to find out how remarkably gifted and perfect these two actors are for bringing Henry and Alex to life.”

In case your book club was one of the few that didn't read McQuiston's YA word-of-mouth megahit, here's a synopsis from a 2019 Logo summer books roundup:

In her New York Times–bestselling debut, McQuiston imagines an alternate America where the POTUS is a hard-working mother of two biracial kids from a previous marriage—and her son, whip-smart college student Alex, has an enduring feud with Henry, the posh, fair-haired Prince of Wales. Fortunately for us, Alex and Henry’s attempts to squash their beef quickly spiral into a super sexy friends-with-benefits situation. Unfortunately for them, the clandestine tryst-turned-romance threatens to ruin Henry’s chances at ascending to the throne and overshadow Alex’s mother’s reelection campaign.

In a statement about the upcoming adaptation, McQuiston said: "It has been a thrill to hand this story over to Berlanti/Schechter, Amazon, and our fearless leader Matthew López and watch them make so many smart, bold, thoughtful choices to bring it to life. This casting is no exception. I absolutely can’t wait to see Taylor and Nicholas on screen as Alex and Henry.”

When filming finished last August, Perez wrote on Instagram: "That’s a wrap on Red, White, and Royal Blue. I wish I could share more than this video, but I promise it’s worth the wait. Thank you to EVERYONE who worked to bring this world to life, OH WHAT A SUMMER!"

Red, White & Royal Blue premieres August 11 on Prime Video.
